Your responsibilities as Commissionership should ALWAYS superceed any responsibilities as an Owner. You'd best change your mindset quickly or find someone else to assume the position because this attitude will only cause problems for your league down the line.

Biased? You had a vote over a month ago where nearly 2/3rds of your owners voted to go to an Auction (7 'yea' votes of the 11 cast). Your problem isn't with being biased...it's with being strong enough to tell your minority owners they're going to have to bite the bullet and deal with the change or find some Yahoo league to occupy their time.

You've got to start behaving more like Machiavelli, Jefferson or Roosevelt and less like John Kerry. Quit "waffling" in an attempt to make everyone happy. As long as you have 7 owners in your corner you're decisions carry. That's the bottom line.

You'd best stop thinking of yourself as an owner when wearing your Commissioners cap. The Commish has to disengage himself from the influences of ownership and make decisions that are best for the league as a whole.

Who cares if you're biased? You should only be concerned with when you're wrong. Assume all your decisions are right and move forward with them as such. Only stop and review your decisions when at least 7 other owners express a problem with it. It'll make your job a lot easier and make your league a lot stronger.

It may be too late to make the change this season, but it's time for you to put your foot down and recognize this change is inevitable and tell your owners the CAFFL will be adopting an Auction next season. You can debate the "hows" at this years Draft so owners can be prepared and have some input into how the transition will work, but the decision has got to be made by someone and if it's not going to be the Commissioner, then who?

Do it. Just do it. Do it.

The whole "do it next year" thing is stupid. THere is no such thing as a team that is "at the top" at the beginning of the season, so to even debate that is ignorant. ANYTHING can happen in football. All it takes is one or two good injuries to go from top to toilet.

If someone's team is that good, why not just skip the draft and the season and give that person "at the top" the championship now. This way you have a whole year to figure out how to do an auction (its not brain surgery). And yes, a regular draft is very pedestrian and pales in comparison to an auction league.

1.) I agree - but with matters abouts rules and grievances... and the integrity of the league. Going from a keeper league to an auction league has nothing to do with the integrity of a league.

2.) I believe the CAFFL has been more about 'just being a part of the CAFFL' and not so much about the rules and our format. So telling owners to bite the bullet and go to another league for something that has nothing to do with the integrity of the CAFFL goes against the vision of the CAFFL and its owners.

3.) There are some things in Congress that require a 'more than majority vote.' And aren;t those things the more significant things... as is the case with this issue.

4.) Again I agree - but going from a keeper system that has worked to an auction system really is not valid to say 'what is best for the league.' It is a preference of the league which is a preference that should be decided by the league owners. And the only outside opinions we have are from those who are part of an auction league. So for you all to say that this system is what is 'best for the league' holds no value.

5.) I would be shocked if any owner in any league DID NOT CARE if the Commish was biased... especially if it came to making decisions.

Nice contradiction---

again --- point to next year is we have owners who have done a lot of off season work for THIS year --- owners who have in the past whether their team was good or bad --- wanted an auction --- so now that we have other owners who all of a sudden want to change their minds --- well --- seems to me we should just wait and ride this season out ---

I tell you to go out and make the ONE statement your league is waiting to hear and you come back with these FIVE excuses. This is what I'm talking about. You're being too much of a politician. I'm not the freaking press. You don't have to answer or explain yourself to me.

Perhaps you misunderstood my first post. I wasn't ASKING you anything. I was TELLING you what you need to do.

Here's the only question I have for you...

Do you think I'd recommend a course of action if it would cause the CAFFL any irrepairable harm? You won't lose a single owner. Not a one.

Now go tell your boys you're going Auction in '05!

I think impeachment and overriding a veto are the only two votes which require a super majority, everything else is a simple plurality (half + one). Just to offer support, the one thing that Mitch points out about the CAFFL is that there has been a tradition of democratic progress. I think that we all respect each others' inputs. Perhaps the common experience of dealing with psychotic and antisocial adolescents has something to do with it. I would like to see the change. But I don't want to change at the expense of alienating anyone nor support a change that would do the same. Seeing as only three CAFFL members have really voiced anything about this on the thread wouldn't give me the confidence to make a unilateral decision if I were the commissioner. I imagine things will start picking up with the start of preseason games. I would like this to be an issue that we discuss and preferably resolve at the draft.

I'm in total support of an auction this year. I don't think it's too late to get things moving. Yes, John has done a lot of work this offseason and I don't think anyone would argue that his team is far and away the best on paper, but just because 1 guy did a lot of work doesn't mean we should rule out the idea. I feel an auction will create a lot of balance the first year, and those that put in the extra effort consistently will be able to build their empire quickly, as before. I still feel my team is very strong, and can contend right now, but I am ready for a change. I seriously doubt anyone would be so mad about the change this year that they'd up and quit over it.

Let's do an auction, draft rules (can use the WWFFL as a reference/guidance) and make this puppy happen this year!!

man do I look for to August every year...

Jim drives it home - we have only 4 or 5 owners voicing anything... at least that I can see...

so nothing changes this year unless we start hearing from others soon.

I, for one, think it would be fun to go to an auction format. But, as others have said, John, Tony, and others have been dealing to prepare for this season. Perhaps we could draft the first seven rounds and then switch to auction after that for this year, assigning specific values to those drafted. Does that make any sense?

I am working on a process that will allow us to draft as usual this year, while transitioning into an auction/salary cap league next year.

This process will allow owners to keep 'x' number of players and also take into account drafting rookies this year and how they would play into next year.

Stay tuned.
I mean hey... all I ask is that you submit your damm line-up each week... otherwise... don;t complain... don;t quit... don;t have a lousy team... and pay your dues... is that too much?

My opinion as an owner: Moving to an auction is great, and I'll support the change either way, but would really like to just play out this year as usual. Either way I'll vote for the auction, though, as I have been wanting to change for years now.

My opinion as former commissioner: Make the change, Mitch. No one will quit and everyone will thank you eventually.

Thinking about Frank's comment in the other post about 'paying an arm and a leg' leads me to believe that indeed at this time, I have an advantage being in tune with the WWFFL and how their league works... which makes it even harder to make a sole decision...

I know how much I can pay for a RB or WR or QB... I could start the auction and throw out a bid of $100 for LT and how many woud immediately shy away...

I can hear it now if I win... "Well, Mitch knew too much about how this system works and then he makes the decision on his own to make the switch... that stinks..."

Boo-hoo-hoo. Quit with the self-depricating hogwash already. No one feels sorry for you because you have the burden of experience. Trust me when I tell you your knowledge may allow you a fraction of an advantage in the Auction at best. You're starting to display a rather John-like arrogance about your involvement in Auction leagues.

I wrote the fucking rules for our league yet is hasn't benefitted me any (I'm still trophyless after 10 years). The only thing you can count on in an Auction is unpredictability. Someone will always surprise you with the value they put on a player (whether it be over-valuing or under-valuing).

Those who drafted well will also do well in an Auction. Methinks thy hubris will ameliorate once your league has completed it's first Auction. You won't do as well and others won't do as poorly as you think.

Quit being a drama queen,

J

so easy for you to say...

we have owners where the CAFFL was their first league... ever... and have voiced the concern that when they started, they knew little about the game compared to other owners and only since the past few years have they really felt comfortable with how the game is played... they now feel they are at an even level with those owners who had more experience...

now you want me to say... "ok everybody, now that we all are on the same playing field and now that you finally got your team to a respectful, competitive level because you have finally figured the strategies our league... I am going to change everything to an auction/sc league so you all can start back at square one... oh.. and ya.. nevermind that I know exactly how the league works, what to expect for salaries, how to manage tagged players, etc..."

I don't have a problem having the advantage... other owners might and therefore they should have a voice...

I will not make a decision on my own as commish when the decision would obviously give me, as an owner, an advantage over others that could carry over for years to come...

With that being said, since I want the change... I am done defending those that do not want the change.
